From its foundation by St.Colmcille in the 6th century, Derry has experienced a varied history right up to recent times.
Political and religious conflicts between invaders and Gaelic chieftains, rival kings of England, planters and native Irish have all directly influenced the history of the city. Even its name as Derry or Londonderry is disputed. Today however, Derry has emerged from its troubled past as Irelands most vibrant city pulsing with life and resonant with centuries of heritage and culture. It was the last city in Ireland to be encircled by walls and the only one where the original walls survive intact. The walled city contains a number of very fine buildings including St. Columbs Cathedral, Western Europes first post reformation cathedral. Visit Tower museum, one of the finest in Europe, and look at the evolution of Derrys history. Enjoy one of the many festivals held in the city including the largest Halloween Carnival in Ireland. Other attractions include an audiovisual presentation of Derrys Celtic heritage at the Calgach Centre and the enterprising Craft Village.
