Brow Head, 'Empress Villas', was originally owned by Vickers Armstrong (now known as BAE Systems) & once housed top management & other famous people such as Barnes Wallace, the man who created the 'bouncing bomb'. Barnes Wallace stayed in Barrow-in-Furness during the early war years. By popular demand, we now enforce a no smoking policy within the hotel guest rooms and main public areas. Smoking on the premises is no longer allowed, but smoking in the foyer and outside the main entrance is still permitted. Barrow is a Victorian town surrounded by beaches and inspiring scenery. The South Lakes Wild Animal Park is one of Europe's leading conservation zoos, located in Dalton-in-Furness, a few miles away. Nearby Ulverston is home to the Laurel and Hardy Museum & Manjushri Mahayana Buddhist Centre at Coniston Head Priory. Established in 1975 as part of the Tibetan Gelugpa tradition, it is now the centre of the New Kadampa Tradition. Housed in a 19th Century mock-Gothic building (built on the site of an Augustinian Priory), it has 70 acres of grounds. The design of the new temple is based on a mandala with 4 doorways & 3 tiers.
