A village therefore developed near the fords and close to two castles which were built to control the fords. The area is rich in heritage and history also, from Clonmacnoise, Europe's most ancient monastic university, to Kilconnell`s 14th century Franciscan Abbey, to the site of the 1691 Battle of Aughrim. Throughout, the emphasis is on tasteful surroundings and traditional Irish hospitality. The Hotel, which began life as the home of Michael Monks in 1814 was immaculately restored and refurbished in 1991 with every modern facility while still retaining the country house atmosphere. The new development at the Shamrock Lodge Hotel opened in late 2005. The hotel now offers 40 executive bedrooms and 12 two bed aparthotels (opening in early 2006).
